Re-mortgage

My partner has got himself in a lot of debt which he is currently managing to pay but this will not last, he has found out about extending our mortgage. I would like to know if I can specify that this part of the mortgage is not mine and his sole responsibility, and if anything should happen this would be the only proceeds he would get to cover his debt, so protecting my investment in our family home? we have phone DAT and we were told as he was paying his debts he didn't have a problem, unfortunately he has no money left after his repayments so we need to do something. Thanks
