Should i negotiate with my debtors or go with a debt management plan

Hello, Im in an extreme amount of debt and struggling to remake repayments. Things were fine until i returned back from maternity leave to work part time and now i just can't afford the repayments without going further into debt. I owe £30,000 but fear this amount is rising as ive started living off credit cards. Should i negotiate with my creditors (my mum did and was succssful) or go with a debt management plan. In principle these seem like a good idea but worried things will go wrong and i feel determined to sort this out on my own. i will still be able to offer each debtor over half of what i am currently pay them so things could be worse. What do you think?

Hello,

I would certainly advise to do research on a company before you consider using them. As it has been mentioned there are companies that will offer a free DMP to you that work on an ethical basis, there are also one or two companies that have a small monthly charge but still operate ethically. Here at DAT we would look at your situation and evaluate the best route for yourself and put you in touch with a company that can provide this solution for you. The companies we refer to are reputable companies with no additional costs to you.

Debt management plan

Like the other poster, I would urge caution. There are government funded debt counsellors who offer free advice as well as free debt management assitance. I found this out at debts.org which is an independent website. I suggest as visit there first.

Debt Management - do your research before signing anything

I chose to enlist the help of a so called debt management company who succeeded in making my situation worse! I have £28,000 worth of debt and gave this company all of the information regarding account numbers, names etc and trusted them to act in the best way possible on my behalf. It took them up to 6 months to make a first payment on a couple of the accounts and the creditors continued to call me throughout this period which obviously did not reduce the stress. Some creditors accepted my explanation that this had been passed to a management company on my behalf but others were tired of hearing this and accused me of continuing to delay payment on purpose. I asked for them to return all of my information to me and to stop acting on my behalf and I contacted all creditors myself to continue with the arrangements that had been made. Some were ok and others went ahead and issued a summons which I tried to avoid from the outset. My advice is to choose a government funded debt trust or bureau who do not charge or make money out of people who are already in debt and who also do not forward your details to companies who offer consolidation loans at extortionate rates to get you into further debt.
