How much money on top of a debt are creditors allowed to charge?

Help please. I had a dept of £1000 with a solicitor. I had been unable to pay it so the solicitor threatned to make me bankrupt. I offered to pay him £800 off the debt, which he has now accepted to stop the bankruptcy, but he says the charges on the debt now make the total debt £3400. Is this legal? What is the law about charging additional fees on top of an original debt? I feel my hands are tied and I am trying to improve my position, but this is extortionate. any advice please.

Hello Elizabeth

Im sorry to hear about your situation, but unfortunatly they can and will charge large amounts of interest when a debt hasnt or isnt being paid. The best thing you can do is to speak to the Citizen's Advice Borough on 0207 833 2128/2181. They will be able to point you in the right direction on what to do next and if possible what action to take. Hope this helps
