How long does a debt last for?

Hi, I had a store card in about 1999.I have not used it since the year 2000,and have not made any payments since this time.To be honest I have not even had the card since this time and had totally forgot that I ever had the card. Recently some 8 years later I have received a debt collection letter out of the blue demanding some £700 forthwith. My question is how long does this debt stay for? A friend told me that if you have not been asked for payments or made any payments for some 6 years then as your credit file is only the last 6 years then all debts are written off. Please could you confirm that this is indeed the case,as surely there must be some kind of cut off point time wise. Many thanks in advance for any help or advice that you can offer.

Your friend is correct in

Your friend is correct in some ways. There is an act called a Limitations Act, which you can look into. You can claim the debt with the store card as statued barred and protect you from legal action being taken against you. For more information go to www.insolvencyhelpline.co.uk. On the left hand side of this site, there a list of columns with information in them. Go to the link for Limitation Act (For Old Debts). This will tell you in more details what you need to do and how it all works. Hope this helps.
