is he liable for her debt?

my brother is splitting up with his wife not a moment too soon ! they split up last year and she purchased a sofa on interest free credit, they then got back together but now she is leaving again! the sofa is in her name only and at the marital rented address on her argos card. the agreement is now coming due where she has to pay for it but she has no intention of paying for it , in fact she is trying to sell the sofa so she has holiday spending money! is my brother liable to hercreditors if it gets to the situation that the bailiffs come around ? he has never had credit in his life he is old school. she also has various other store cards that we suspect will not be paid either. so my question is if he tells everyone that she has moved is that it his job done? or is her creditors still able to send bailiffs around to his house and remove goods from his house even though she does not live there any more and the goods wont be there i.e the settee? is there an option of him telling the company to come and pick the settee up if she leaves it there? my brother cannot afford to settle her debts for her either even if he wanted to. advice would be very much greatly recieved

hello familycounsellor

Your brother is not liable to any of his ex partner’s debts. As long as none of the debts are in joint names then your brother is doesn’t have to pay them. If bailiffs do attend his property, then just tell them that she no longer lives at the property. They cannot take goods that belong to your brother. Hope this helps
