Considering emmigrating to Canada - Will my debt follow me, or affect my Visa application / citizenship???
Dear Reader
I am aged 29 and I am in a fairly bad situation with debt. I currently owe approximately:
£20,000 Cooperative Bank Personal Loan.
£5,000 HSBC Credit Card.
£2,000 HSBC Overdraft.
£3,000 Egg Credit Card.
£5,000 Student Loan Company.
My minimum monthly payments for these debts comes to approximately £600 per month, plus bank charges on top of that, which can be anything up to £80 per month!!!
I am currently making all of my payments and have never missed a payment at all, but am constantly getting a lot of bank charges for going overdrawn and am always skint due to paying off all my debts!!! I am in a steady job which pays about £27,500 per annum (before deducations), which works out at around £1,650 per month after deductions.
I have never really let my debt bother me too much up until recently, as I have always managed to make my monthly payments and like I said I have never actually missed any payments.
However, I am now considering taking some time out of work to go to Canada, with the intention of possibly moving there to live on a permanent basis. My partner is Canadian and she is moving back there to live permanently.
If I were to go to Canada, either on a temporary or part time basis, what would be the implications of this with my debt - would I be able to:
1. Freeze my payments if I could prove that I had a job to come back to in the UK (my job have offered me a Career Break)?
2. make payments from abroad at a reduced rate of payment?
3. Leave my debt behind in the UK if I were to move there permanently?
4. Go bankrupt either in the UK or abroad - how would this affect my immigration to Canada, or how would it affect me if I were to come back to the UK at a later date?
Sorry for so many questions!!!
Any advice or information would be very much appreciated!!!!
