Accessing your info from overseas to try and rectify any debt!

I lived in the UK from May of 1998 to March of 2005. In this time I lived in various places in London, and spent quite a considerable amount of time working part-time, and travelling inbetween my work periods. Unfortunately during this period I accummulated some debt, which I tried to get out of but failed on numerous occassions. I (think - but am not entirely sure!) that I may have entered a debt agreement which lapsed, and also left the country without finalising my credit-card or an overdraft which I had. They were not huge amounts, but I do not want any further black marks on my credit rating in the UK, and would like to try to rectify any bad debts which I had when I left the UK 3 years ago. Unfortunately, although I realise that it's no excuse, at the time I was 'not in a good place', and therefore have no memory, or idea what debts there were, and to what extent I left my personal records in. I now live a very straight life, and although they were not huge amounts, I do not want any further black marks on my credit rating on the UK, and would like to try to rectify any bad debts which I had when I left the there in the past. I was also thinking of possibly returning to the UK in the next couple of years and don't want any further problems upon entering the country, or obtaining bank accounts, or a possibly mortgage in the future. Could you advise me on this as well please? I really don't even know where to begin to look, and I was hoping that you might be able to assist me in this matter so that I can sort it out as soon as possible.

Hello Kerryn

I’m glad to hear that you are now back on the straight and narrow. Personal debts will affect your credit rating, but your credit rating can be restored. You will be properly be better contacting the creditors now and letting them now about your situation and offer to pay token payments back to the debt. I am presuming that the country you are currently living in will have there own advice center where you can get some advice on how to start paying the debts back. You should be able to get a very basic bank account when you are back in the UK, and a possible remortgage in the future shouldn’t be a problem also, but speak to the advice center to get more information on this. Hope this helps.
