Made Bankrupt in absence

I hold my hands up and hadnt paid my Council Tax. Eventually I was taken to court for Bankrupcy. I said I would get a loan or the money from somewhere and they adjourned the case for a month. I then applied for various loans which I can get but will take anothher couple of weeks (Initial hearing was 29th Feb 2008). I was expecting a letter from the court giving me a date and time of the next hearing which to date I have not received. Today in the post I received 2 letters from finance companies saying how sorry they were that I had been declared bankrupt and could they help. I phoned one of them up and asked what they were talking about cos as far as I was concerned proceedings were adjourned and I was making arrangements, and hadnt been given a new date or time of the adjourned hearing. The chappy I spoke to said the hearing took place on 26/3/08 in my absence and I was made bankrupt. Surely this cant be right....................now I cant even take up my loan offers because technically I am now bankrupt even though I wasnt there to explain things cos I hadnt been notified of the new date!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated Alye

Hello Alyejb

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. You should have been aware of the new court hearing. You are going to have to speak to the court that actually made you bankrupt! Ask them the reasons why you weren’t notified of the new hearing date and the reasons why you were declared bankrupt (and not told). You should have had the opportunity to petition against the bankruptcy. Hope this helps.
