Massive Credit Card Debt

Hi there,

While we were together, me and my boyfriend planned to take a few trips to America and the Caribbean to see our friends and family. We decided that we should take these planned holidays and use a credit card to pay for all our expenses, as this seemed like such an easy option. We had taken out 2 credit cards with a limit of £5000 each, which covered all our expenses well. We were not really hesitant to take out credit as the both of us could afford the repayments as we both had good jobs, with good regular income

After some time, me and my boyfriend started getting into some problems due to him being made redundant at work, so this left me struggling to pay back the monthly installment plan while he was out looking for work. Eventually, me and my boyfriend split up due to the amount of stress of him not being able to find work and me struggling with my finances.

At the moment, the debt stands at £8600, which I'm having to pay all by myself....on top of other household bills. I am afraid that if i continue struggling to keep up with these repayments, I will eventually have a bad credit rating which will eventually leave my name blacklisted. My ex said that he will eventually help out when he finds a job, but I have not heard nothing from him since.

Is there any advice you can give me that can help me out in my current situation?

Thanks
Chantelle

Hello Chantelle,

The first thing that you should do is advise your creditors of the full extent of your situation. If they know what is going on they are more likely to help with any advice they can give you. You need to work out if you can afford to pay anything back towards this debt if so then there maybe a number of solutions available to you. Give the advisors at DAT a call and they will point you in the right direction. It's a free phone call and any information given goes no further.
