owe my ex employers money

Upon leaving my previous employers in march i was overpaid. I noticed i had more money than expected in my bank account i phoned ex employers payroll department. to ask if the amount they paid me was correct - they said it was I carried on with life as normal. Got a letter in May to say i had to pay money back by end of month or details would be passed to their debt recovery department. coulsn't afford to pay back, so i contacted them at end of may to explain myself. I asked if it was possible to pay back in installments - they said they didn't except payments in installments. so i asked for more time. I said i would try to get money together by end of July. The thing is , i am in a job that pays considerably less than my previous one, me and my partner anre coping with our mortgage, bills and modest credit debts without stress, but we have nothing to spare after our expenses etc... The amount of money i owe isn't all that large (£900), however , the idea of this amount of money going to debt recovery worries me a lot. I used to have a terrible credit record about 10 years back, and it took me 6 or 7 years to put my debt riddled past behind me. Will this money going to debt recovery effect my credit rating,,,,, are my employers in their rights to not accept my offer of coming to an affordable arrangmnt. Is it better to increase my overdraft, get a loan etc to pay this?

hello karmaboy

I would advise you not to get out further debt to clear the amount you owe, because the debt is with an ex employer then you are able to pay the debt back at what you can afford monthly. If you find that you are struggling with your other commitments then give us a call and we will be able to find a tailored solution to your circumstances. A debt collector is only there to collect a debt, which again you are able to pay the debt collector monthly at what you can afford. Hope this helps and speak to you soon.
