Big Debts and don't know what to do

I have been a bad boy in the past, run up thousands of debt with numerous credit cards, personal loans etc, had my house repossessed back in 1995, although got mortgages and credit cards after this, escaped to Cyprus in 2004 and returned to Uk skint to try and rebuild a life. HBOS have now written to me saying that I owe them over £20,000 from the shortfall from when they re-sold the house they repossessed, how they found me I don't know, I'm a lodger now, not on the electoral role, started work so presume they found out my new address through my tax code/NI number and work. When are the rest gonna come knocking on my door for retribution. How will this affect my work. I'm living month to month, survive with a £300 overdraft so I haven't any spare money, just tired of this situation I've lived with for the past 12 years and don't know whats best? Bankruptcy-IVA-escape back abroad. If I ever find a partner how does this effect them, just worrying me senseless at the moment and don't know were to turn - they can't shoot me but that feels like the best alternative at the moment AMC-Jasperdog

Hello Jasperdog

After reading your about your situation, I believe you should give us a call at the Debt Advice Trust. The debts you have from a few years ago will eventually catch up with you, and because of interest and charges, you may find that the debt has increased. Contact Experience or Equifax, they will be able to give you a list of your debts. The mortgage shortfall you have is a debt you are going to have to pay back, but we can put this as an unsecured debt. By taking down your details we will be able to find the right solution for you, tailored to your circumstances. Our number is 0800 954 6518 In regards to a future partner, they would not be affected by your debts. The debts solely in you name so cannot affect anyone else. The only time it would, is if you were to get a mortgage in joint names with a partner and you declare or are declared bankrupt. They would take the property from you regardless of you is on it and who owes the debts. Hope this helps and speak to you soon.
