bankruptcy and citizenship - urgent

Hello, my husband is british and I am american with an visa (permanent). We are married. Together we owe about £28000. My husband is thinking about going bankrupt, because we are now unable to afford repayment of the basic things ( we are also applying for housing assistance). We do not own any property, but one van. My husband is self employed but no accounts in business as he is basically a handyman. My question is this: I too am not making any money. I have two cards in my name: totaling £9000. Will these be included in his bankruptcy or are only bills in his name included? Will electric bills in my name be included, etc. We are £2600 overdrawn in our joint bank account. Will all this be included in his bankruptcy or will they not include it because my name is on it? Or would I have to file bankruptcy as well and if so can I in the UK if I am American? Forgive me for so many questions. How would you suggest we go about resolving these issues: should I try to get my name off of the account and all utilities, etc or can we file joint bankuptcy even though I am American. I have tried to contact the CBA but I can never get through on the telephone. Also appointments are by the same telephone number.

Hello Mary Burt

Only debt in your husbands name will be included in the bankruptcy, but because they are joint debts, these would be included in the bankruptcy order but you would become fully liable for the full amount of those joint debts. No debt in your sole name would be included in the bankruptcy, only if you apply for bankruptcy yourself. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t know if you going bankruptcy would effect your VISA to live in the UK, I would speak to a Emigration Agency as they should be able to tell you what you can and cant do on your VISA. Also speak with a bankruptcy clerk at your local county court for more advice on bankruptcy. Sorry I cannot be any more Assistance.
