Debt and the Law - Understand your Rights and Responsibilities
The Law takes debt seriously. If you haven’t repaid your debts, your creditors can legally take further action against you. It’s important that you understand your legal rights and responsibilities if this happens to you. It’s also very important to recognise that impartial and expert advice can make an enormous difference to the outcome of any debt problems you are currently facing.
If you have started to get default notices, your creditors may be considering taking legal steps. Legally, your creditors can lodge a County Court Judgement (CCJ) against you, or employ bailiffs to take your belongings to repay your debt.
Know your rights
The Debt Advice Trust can give you free, impartial advice on debt solutions before your debt becomes a legal matter. If legal steps have been taken against you, then let us know as soon as possible. We exist to show everyone facing debt problems the best way forward and we will let you know your rights and explain what options are available to you.
