What are bailiffs?

Bailiffs are people who are employed by the courts or privately to take away your possessions in order to sell them off to repay debt. Fortunately, an IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) or another debt solution can usually save you all of this stress and embarrassment. Talk to the Debt Advice Trust - we do not depend on funding from lenders or banks and we can give you expert, honest and impartial advice on debt solutions.

You will normally receive notice that a bailiff will be calling at your home to take away possessions. A debt solution would enable you to negotiate with the bailiffs or your creditors so that you can avoid anyone entering your home.

Types of bailiffs

Bailiffs can be acting on various instructions. They could be employed to enforce a debt, to force an eviction, to enforce a court injunction, or to repossess goods under hire purchase. Needless to say, a visit from a bailiff is an unpleasant experience. So if you’ve got debts you can’t manage, talk to the Debt Advice Trust without delay.

Take stock of all your debts

Bailiffs will only be interested in their employer’s particular debt. But if you’ve got even more debts and are struggling to meet the repayments, it may be time to consider an IVA, debt consolidation or a Debt Management Plan. Talk to the Debt Advice Trust to find out more.

Bailiffs FAQs

  • Q: Can bailiffs force their way into my house?

A: No they can’t, but that isn’t going to make your debts go away and you will probably then be faced with other legal action. Don’t leave yourself vulnerable, call the Debt Advice Trust today.

  • Q: Who would I talk to at the Debt Advice Trust about a possible debt solution?

A: You can talk directly to one of our fully trained Debt Counsellors who will ensure you get all the advice you need about your individual debt situation.
